With Halloween just around the corner, like many, I’m sure you have yet to find the perfect costume. As you build your lists and narrow down your choices, be sure to consult Emily’s Costumes I DON’T Want To See This Year before you choose a costume everyone is tired of seeing. If you’re looking for originality and a costume that won’t bore your friends to death, well, you’re in the right place. I did the research, so you don’t have to! Say goodbye to Barbie, Ghostface, and Chucky; here are some of the top costumes I would like to see from you this Halloween:
01. Fancy Nancy

Ooh la la! She’s cute, she’s spunky, and she’s unique in her own way. There is no better way to express your creativity than by channeling your inner Fancy Nancy for the night. Let’s be real, we all wished we could dress like her when we were young– so what’s stopping us now? Embrace your inner child and don’t forget your parasol–that’s a fancy way of saying umbrella!
02. If You Give A Mouse A Cookie
For this one, think a level up from the Cookie Monster trend we saw in 2019! Leave your onesies behind and get creative with this look. You could rock this one solo or with a partner. It’s original, it’s fun, and it promotes literature; I think it’s safe to say that department needs as much recognition as it can get right now.

03. Paddington Bear

We’ve seen deer, bunnies, cats, and mice, whether they come with a cookie, in threes, or even blind! If you like animal costumes but you want to stay original, then skip the all-black ‘cat’ outfit that you keep stored away in the back of your closet as a backup. Paddington Bear is the best of both worlds in this scenario: he’s just as simple, plus, he’s much cuter!
04. Max and Ruby
Whether you’re truly siblings or best friends who are practically like siblings, Max and Ruby are the only “bunny” exception costume I want to see this year. Give Cat Noir and Ladybug a break! This iconic duo is the niche you’re looking for this Halloween. No one does best friends better than Max and Ruby.
05. Mabel: Gravity Falls
Another spunky, yet original costume idea. Mabel gives main character energy, and I want to see her come to life this year. So, grab your shooting star sweater, a plastic headband, and bonus points if you include her pet pig, Waddles!
Ok group costumes, this one’s for you! A friendly reminder that Scooby-Doo is not the only good group costume idea out there. And besides, Phineas and Ferb are arguably more innovative than the Scooby-Gang–therefore, they’re much cooler. Nevertheless, this ‘2000s core’ costume serves as a much better alternative to the very worn-out Velma and Daphne costumes I’ve seen all too many of over the past few years (Admittedly, I too have fallen victim to this trend, and I am not proud of it).
07. Coraline
Surprisingly, what I classify as my personal niche has found its way into the spotlight over the last year or so. So naturally, I wouldn’t mind seeing this costume this year. There are many different variations of Coraline that you could embody; however, she is most recognizable for her bright yellow raincoat. (P.S. Stay away from small square doors and anyone with buttons for eyes)
08. Cooking Mama
Before there was Papa’s Pizzeria, there was Cooking Mama–embrace your roots this Halloween! Whether those cooking skills have been brought to life or not, this simple costume will heal your inner child, and you’ll look cute too!
Be creative, be innovative, but most importantly, have fun and be safe!
