March for Life 2020

On January 24, 2020, more than 400,000 people attended the March for Life protest to march their stand about abortion. The March for Life is an annual rally and march held in Washington, D.C. protesting both the practice and legality of abortion. The streets were filled with women, men, young people, and children from all across the world.

Father James MacNew, the Campus Minister from Holy Family University hosted a trip where he took 28 students to experience and display their opinions about abortion. At 6:30 in the morning, Father Mac filled the bus with students to make their way to Washington, D.C. As the students arrived at the march around 12 in the afternoon, they were ready to embark on an eventful day.

To Father MacNew, the event to him meant that he was able to offer the students at Holy Family a chance to live their faith on the streets of the nation’s capital. He wanted the students to grab a specific message: “We go, as members of the Holy Family community, more as a spiritual event in support of Catholic teaching in regard to reverence for every human person. We go, primarily to live our Pro-Life faith convictions in public as a teaching about the truth as taught by the Catholic Church. We go as Lived Spirituality, not so much as political activists.”

Wilmer Ceaser Pozo, a student from Holy Family University graduating in the year 2023 and a major of Physician’s Assistant, expressed his reasons for why he decided to attend this event. He stated, “I wanted to attend the event because I wanted to get a different perspective on the march because I wasn’t sure if I was pro-choice or pro-life, so I wanted to go to get an influence of other people’s ideas and beliefs.”

Throughout the event, there were different chants from the people, drummers from schools, and even multiple college students from different parts of the country. The event was fairly peaceful where people talked, ate food, but some arguments erupted between pro-life protesters and pro-choice protesters.

One impactful part of the event has to be when there were a couple of women on the podium in front of the supreme court sharing their stories about their abortions and how it affected not only them but their family also. Other women spoke about how their parents forced them to have an abortion even if they wanted to keep the baby. The decisions of abortion shortly after made them feel regret and pain from the life they have just taken away.

Later throughout the event is when a woman showed on a big screen how the abortion procedure is done. It also showed the graphic aftermath of an abortion. Protesters walking by can be seen emotional, devastated and shocked after seeing these images.

Coming toward the end of the trip, David Platt who is a highly respected pastor and author announced that he will adopt another child. Platt said, “One year ago, God used this march along with a variety of other means for my wife and me to begin the process of adoption.”
